EVENTS YOU WILL FIND AT THE LANCASTER FESTIVAL
ORCHESTRA PERFORMANCES
Listed below are some of the events that typify those qualities.
The Lancaster Festival Orchestra has about 65 members from Orchestras all over the world.
The full orchestra normally has two outdoor Saturday night concerts at a natural amphitheater on the
campus of Ohio University - Lancaster. These events feature symphonic works for half of each
concert and for the second half, the orchestra is usually joined by a world class "headline" performer.
Past headliners have included Aretha Franklin, Kathy Mattea, Doc Severinsen, Lorna Luft, Ben Vereen, and Aretha Franklin.
The Festival Orchestra has also performed an all-symphonic concert on the first Wednesday evening
of the Festival schedule.
CHAMBER MUSIC
Chamber Orchestra performances are usually given at St. Mary Church. The Chamber Orchestra
includes about 40 orchestra musicians as well as guest soloists, both vocal and instrumental.
The Chamber Orchestra concerts may include concertos and traditional chamber works. Orchestra
musicians also perform in smaller ensembles during the Festival.
ARTWALK
Art Galleries and businesses in Lancaster's Historic District open their doors to exhibitions
by artists from around the country. In one evening, thousands of people converge on downtown
streets for this popular social and cultural event.
CAFE CONCERTS
A delightful series of chamber music played by Festival Orchestra members and special guest
artisits in the manner of Romantic period cafes in Paris and other European capitals. It's a
wonderful opportunity to get close to the people who make beautiful music. These concerts are
held at Shaw's Restaurant and Inn with free refreshments and pastries.
YOUNG PEOPLES CONCERT
An outdoor orchestra concert aimed at young audiences, the Young Peoples Concert has drawn larger
audiences each year. Children of all ages have enjoyed performances by Ollie Opus, Arnett Howard,
Wilkes Young Artist Fellows, and have even traveled the globe in search of Carmen Sandiego (TM) and
her musical bootie. An audience member may even be selected to conduct the orchestra. Pre-concert
activities include games, face painting, balloons, and even zoo animals.
COMPOSER IN RESIDENCE
During some Festivals, a composer is chosen to come to Lancaster and have his or her works performed
(some for the first time). During the Composer's Symposium, works by the composer will be
performed and then discussed with the musicians, the audience, and the composer.
CHILDREN'S PROGRAMMING
Many Festival events are intended to provide children with exposure to music and art. These include the
Young Peoples Concert, Rising Park Day, Festival Fair Day, Bandstand, Mall, Knights of Columbus and Library
performances, and the Children's Art Fair. Most of these events are free.
BANDSTAND PERFORMANCES
Free, noon-time performances are held at the downtown bandstand at Zane's Square, where food is also available
from local vendors. There are also friday evening concerts, and several other special events during the
Festival.
LANCASTER CHORALE
Under the direction of founder and artistic director, Robert Trocchia, the Lancaster Chorale has earned
plaudits and kudos from a wide range of choral enthusiasts nationwide. It's remarkable precision and sense
of ensemble are hallmarks of Trocchia's distinctive approach to choral music.
MASTER CLASSES
Prior to the start of the some festivals, orhcestra musicians work with local music
students on several aspects of their instrument. The day-long session ends
with a group assembly, where selected students perform.
MAJOR ARTS FOR MINORS
The Major Arts for Minors educational program provides a week-long opportunity
for children to learn about various aspects of music and arts. Hour-long sessions are
led by musicians or local arts hosts.
