Current Professional Activites:
Dr. Melissa Stevens is currently the oboe professor at Otterbein College. She was the Assistant Professor of Oboe at Capital University from 1992-1997 and a member of the Capital Winds. In addition to playing with ProMusica, Melissa has been an Associate with the Columbus Symphony since 1994. She also plays oboe and English horn with Lancaster Festival, a position she has held since 2001. From 1998-2001, she was a member of the Wheeling Symphony.
Dr. Stevens has performed at the 1999 National Flute Convention and the 2001 International Double Reed Society Convention as a member of the Cardinal Trio. She has attended the Aspen Music Festival, Waterloo Music Festival, and was awarded the Presidential Scholar from RI to attend Interlochen.
Dr. Stevens received her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree and a Master’s degree from the Ohio State University where she studied with Robert Sorton. At OSU, Dr. Stevens was awarded the Graduate School Alumni Research Award for her study and research of famed oboist, Marcel Tabuteau in which she had articles on Tabuteau published in the Flute Quarterly and the Double Reed Journal. Melissa has most recently been cited in Laila Storch’s book, “Marcel Tabuteau, How Do You Expect to Play the Oboe if You Can’t Peel a Mushroom?” Melissa earned her Bachelor’s degree in oboe from the New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida, where she was a student of John de Lancie.
Melissa resides in Westerville with her husband, Mark Stevens, and their three children Noah, Nathaniel and Sarah.
