Lancaster's Music Heritage - Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (1910-1917)

"Lancaster had its own symphony orchestra which flourished from 1909 until the beginning of World War I when it disbanded about September, 1917. Jacob Zimphfer was conductor of the orchestra which was heard in concerts in the City Hall Auditorium. Zimphfer, father of attorney George Zimphfer, had attended the Boston School of Music and played with the Boston Symphony prior to this time. Among the youngest members was Roderick R. Shaw who has contributed a copy of the program for the Fifth Season. November 29, 1914. Miss Myrtle Ginder (Mrs. Frank Smith) was accompanist. Compositions by Offenbach, Strauss, Massenet and Haydn were included in the 1914 concert. The printed program also includes an impressive list of patrons as well as paid advertisements for some of the early businesses and professions. Among them W H Crook, optometrist, Kane's Music Store, Rocky Dental Parlors, Kirn Bos. Shoes, Frank Winter Hardware Co. and the Alps confectionery. G O Berry is listed as orchestra president and on the advisory board were such prominent names as Judge J G Reeves and George Ewing among others. The personnel included in addition to Zimphfer and Shaw, Thomas Wiseman, Paul Sexauer, George Wyman, the Erick brothers, Karl and Frank, and Peter Hammond."
