Lancaster's Music Heritage - Jacob Zimpfer, composer and conductor


Studies at the New England Conservatory:
In 1903 he studied violin for 2 semesters with Emil Mahr and harmony with Harry N. Redman. In 1904 he took 2 semester of counterpoint with Redman and in 1905 he studied counterpoint and composition for one semester with our then Director, George W. Chadwick. Zimpfer's original address is listed as Columbus, Ohio and later Winthrop, MA.

"Old Officers of the Lancaster Mechanics Band Will Serve Another Year"
'The Lancaster Mechanics Band, which has been in existence in Lancaster for thirty-five years, has just closed a very successful season, furnishing to the people of Lancaster and vicinity the best of music.
After the regular Monday night rehearsal the following officers were re-elected, after having served a most successsful term: Mr. J H Zimpfer, director; Mr. Geo Wyman, president;Mr. D Brown, vice president; Mr. B Rabourn, secretary and treasurer.
The boys are prepared to give to this community for the coming season the very best services.
Mr. J H Zimpfer who is now serving his third term as director of the band, has just published a set of artistic trombone instructions, which are receiving recognition by the leading band masters and artists in the United States.'

Obituary
Jacob H Zimpfer, 82, of E. Mulberry St., one of the few remaining Spanish-American War veterans in this area, died today at 2:15 am at his residence.
Mr. Zimpfer was in the retail collection business for 50 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. P H Durant, Jr., Newark, a son, Atty. George Zimpfer, Lancaster, a granddaughter, Miss Kay Durant, Newark, 4 sisters, Mrs. William Schneider, Bexley, Mrs. Frank Stehle, Columbus, Mrs. Frank Brown, Sarasota, Fla., and Mrs. Arthur Journey, Cleveand, and one brother [Fr]ed Zimpfer of Columbus.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 3 pm from the Frank E Smith Funeral Home with Dr. George W Herd officiating. Burial is to be made in Maple Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home after 7 pm Saturday.
